Top 5 Ways to Break into Broadcasting
Click Here to View User Submitted Content
Breaking into a career in Broadcasting can be about as tough as breaking into any career without experience, armed with only a degree and no connection to make that magic phone call. Here are a few suggestions that will get your career in Broadcasting started!
1.
YouTube
YouTube is an excellent way to spice up your resume with video. Video is an excellent way in order to stand out among the crowd when it comes to your career. I would suggest looking for career oriented sites that allow for free video posting in addition to YouTube. Also, be sure to post a professional and compelling video as there are many people who may be hurting and not helping their careers by posting video resumes online.
2.
Internships
Internships can help fill in that lack of experience on your resume as well as help you gain great contacts and maybe even a job with the company you intern with. Most companies will be flexible schedule wise as well as rewarding if you can do an unpaid or low paid internship. Radio stations are a good source but here are a few additional Broadcasting Intership Opportunities.
CBS News Internship Program
IHS Production Internships
Arizona State Legislature
Radio-Television News Directors Association
National Association of Broadcasters
Colleges & Universities are an excellent resource even if you didn't attend because of the public information they provide.
Washington and Lee University
State University of New York at Albany
UC Berkeley
3.
Passionate Cover Letter
A compelling story in your cover letter including a link to your YouTube Video enforcing the same mantra will allow you to stand out among other candidates.
4.
An Innovative Job Search
Traditional job search engines may not be the best way to go when looking for a non traditional entry point. You may have to be more creative here due to your lack of experience. Not to fear because there are many companies out there looking for you but you have to think like they do. The companies looking for you aren't spending a lot of money on recruitment for a entry level candidate. Job Search Engines and free Classifieds like
Craigslist
is going to be excellent resources for your search.
5.
Network
Trust me, everyone else understands your pain on this one. Networking is not easy but something simple as free business cards from
VistaPrint
are a cheap alternative to spicing up your networking efforts. Distribute them liberally and watch for local networking opportunities.
